The founding members of the effort to create the top-level domain ".eco" today released the principles underpinning use of .eco - reiterating their commitment that .eco addresses should fund proven efforts to combat climate change.
Former Vice President Al Gore and the Alliance for Climate Protection, the Sierra Club and Surfrider Foundation are among those backing the Dot Eco LLC plan. By charter, more than half of .eco profits are earmarked for groups and organizations with a commitment to combat global warming.
"The .eco effort is a timely and important one - bringing about broad awareness of the urgency of and solutions to the climate crisis," said Alliance for Climate Protection President and CEO Maggie L. Fox. "The Alliance for Climate Protection is excited to be working with Dot Eco LLC and support their commitment to nonprofit climate and environmental organizations such as ours."
The purpose of this comprehensive Green Paper is to outline in detail the guiding principles of the Dot Eco LLC commitment to combating climate change most effectively.
The Green Paper states:
"Before registering a .eco web address, individuals and businesses must affirm that they support the basic founding principles of the .eco community." "All individuals, organizations and corporations that use a .eco address will be declaring their commitment to protecting and defending the planet." "Our goal is to make .eco a ubiquitous and recognizable web address, much like .ORG, that provides a steady and growing source of funding for leading environmental organizations." "We are committed to operating .eco as a tight, customer-focused, well-run business in order to use our revenues to help the environment."
Former Vice President Al Gore described his support for the Dot Eco LLC plan for the .eco web address in a Dot Eco video unveiled last month during a meeting of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) in Sydney:
"For more than three decades I have been trying to raise awareness about the very real and growing threat of the climate crisis. Today, as part of this effort, I am here to propose a new top-level domain called "Dot Eco" for corporate, non-governmental, and individual environmental websites."
Dot Eco LLC was founded by Fred Krueger, Clark Landry and Minor Childers to secure, operate and promote the .eco top level domain in order to advance environmental initiatives and awareness. Dot Eco LLC will be applying for the .eco top level domain through the ICANN gTLD application process in early 2010. For more information, visit www.supportdoteco.com.
